Roscoe Churchill and Laura Furtman (Gauger) collaborated in the early 2000s to write a book about the Flambeau Mine that is now available online as a free download.

The book, entitled The Buzzards Have Landed! – The Real Story of the Flambeau Mine, discusses the evolution of Wisconsin’s mining laws, the politics involved in bringing the mine to Ladysmith, Wisconsin, the economics of the project and environmental concerns. Of particular interest, Churchill and Furtman (Gauger) did numerous open records requests of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources  to gain access to groundwater and surface water monitoring data for the mine and assembled that data into tables and graphs for ease in review.

The book cites many technical reports issued by Kennecott Minerals/Rio Tinto, documents drafted by state agencies, environmental monitoring data, financial spreadsheets, legal briefs, scholarly reports written by Evelyn Churchill in the 1980s and 1990s regarding the shortfalls of Wisconsin’s mining laws, correspondence between attorneys, government officials and private citizens, newspaper stories, and so much more. The free online edition of The Buzzards Have Landed! contains hyperlinks to all of these documents so you can read for yourself.
